The Maison Blaoui in Marrakesh

A boutique straight out of ‘1000 and 1 Nights’ and an absolute must-visit: sightseeing at Maison Blaoui on the edge of Marrakesh's old town. Even if there is no more room at home for elaborately crafted chests of drawers, colourful armchairs or African sculptures, it is well worth a visit. The boutique extends over an entire house. And invites you to browse, marvel and... Shopping.

The shop is a true institution. Even the famous fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent, who was known for his avant-garde designs and unique style, bought furniture and exquisite accessories here for his home in Marrakesh. The selection of handcrafted pieces is impressive and ranges from carpets and ornate lamps to stylish furniture that reflects traditional Moroccan and African craftsmanship. Every room in the house is designed to appeal to the senses and invite visitors on a journey of discovery. From the cellar to the upper floors: there is something new and fascinating to discover in every corner.

We enter the boutique through a heavy wooden door and come into a spacious inner courtyard. Even here, our eyes are drawn to some beautiful pieces. A narrow staircase leads us down to the basement and then we continue from room to room, from bottom to top, once round and round until we are back in the inner courtyard. In addition to beautiful design accessories, lamps and mirrors, we discover all kinds of art and antiques from all over Africa.

The company in the shop is refreshingly restrained, especially if you have just come from the city's lively souks, where the hustle and bustle and colourful stalls can often be overwhelming. Here, the staff are more concerned that no one gets lost or is left in the dark.

In every room, you can feel the sensitivity for design and decoration with which the lady of the house, Carole Blaoui, has selected and arranged the pieces. If you enjoy it, you should definitely bring more time for your visit than originally planned.
