Truro

Truro is the capital of Cornwall and has a lot to offer - even if it is not directly by the sea and the Cornish charm is not as noticeable as in some fishing villages.

A big advantage in Truro are all the food shops, including Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, but also M&S or a Waitrose. I can particularly recommend the latter, as it has a well-stocked range and an adjoining shop with all kinds of regional specialities. From chocolate to gin. But it's not just food that's sold there, but also souvenirs made in Cornwall. Perfect for friends and family!

Of course, the city centre also has all kinds of shops for everyday needs, such as electronics shops, Boots (an English drugstore) and much more. As well as the well-known British bookshop Waterstones.

If you get hungry during your visit, you are also in good hands in this small town. There is a café called Bread&Butter (https://www.breadandbuttertruro.com/), which specialises in sweet dishes. The pancakes on the menu are particularly tasty and come in many different flavours.

However, you should note that the pancakes are only available at certain times. It is best to make a reservation (highly recommended, tables are passed on after 10 minutes). However, if they are no longer available, this is not a problem, as the sandwitches are also very tasty and plentiful.

Another restaurant tip for Truro is HOOKED (https://www.hookedtruro.co.uk/).

It mainly serves seafood and has a great kitchen. I can highly recommend the fish & chips, even if it's not my favourite (which you can find out more about in the separate blog post for restaurants). However, no restaurant has yet been able to beat the fish curry from there, as it is really deliciously flavoured! Be sure to leave room for the chocolate tartlet at the end. This really is the cherry on top of the cream of well-matched chocolate combinations, even with the famous Cornish fudge.

I should also mention the famous cathedral of the small town, which is really beautiful and extremely well maintained. Definitely worth a short visit!

Of course, we can also highly recommend accommodation in Truro, namely The Alverton Hotel (https://thealverton.co.uk/). It is a very nice hotel in a historic abbey. It is in a quiet location and yet only a 10-minute walk from the city centre. When the weather is nice, you can relax on the spacious terrace in the middle of the park-like garden, enjoy a delicious meal or a drink.

If you wish, you can also book the welcome package: There are delicious welcome drinks at the bar and a cream tea with traditional Cornish scones. Both highly recommended. My ultimate tip: the Berrytea, which is served with the cream tea on request.
